Framing decisions — when to float, when to glaze, when to leave it alone

The frame is a curatorial decision, not a finishing touch. A 70/30 rule, three studio examples, and the conservator's veto.

Float-mounting suits work where the edges are part of the language. Glazing protects works on paper from humidity but introduces glare. Unframed canvas is the cleanest option for contemporary oils — but only if the stretcher is properly braced.

The conservator's veto: if a piece is going to a humid coastal city (Lagos, Mombasa, Maputo), glazing changes from a stylistic choice to a structural one.
