Editions, scarcity, and the myth of the "limited" print in African contemporary

Print editions are the gateway drug of collecting — and the most-abused contract in emerging-market galleries. Here's how to read one.

An edition of 25 should mean 25 — not 25 plus 10 artist proofs plus 5 "hors commerce" plus 3 the gallery quietly held back for VIPs. In well-governed markets the total edition (including AP and HC) is declared on the certificate and physically stamped on the back of the work.

Ask. If the gallery hedges, you have your answer.
